Icefall Lodge

I think this was my 9th hut trip with these guys over the past 10 years. I wouldn't miss it for anything.

A helicopter-centric video (there wasn't much ski footage) and
some more photos

  1. Apparently pictures are worth a thousand words...total crap, i want a write up!!

it was +22 here in montreal yesterday, the snow is melting fast and i am loving the shorts weather. Skiing, what skiing? Bring on the trail running!!

  2. Looks like a great trip! Choppers are cool.

I too find it difficult to take pictures and video of the group cranking turns...nobody ever wants to stop and let me go first to take photos. It could be because they let me do it once and I didn't stop, instead I stole all the great turns and then bragged about it back in the cabin that night!...ahh good times...

i need to shoot a lot of video to capture anything worth keeping. the visibility was...er, "challenging"...at best on this trip which didn't help!

nice to know people are reading this blog :)

  5. How did you find the terrain around the lodge. I think Tess and I are going in this december. How much is glacier? Just wondering since it's pretty early in the year. Do you have the topo map.....maybe we could borrow it ;)

    Thanks,
    Loïc

  6. hi loïc,

it took us a few days to get a feeling for the lay-of-the-land at icefall. i s'pose it's not really that complex but we needed a few outings to put the pieces together. more so than with other huts we've visited. the area around mount la clytte - i wish you luck with the pronunciation :) - is heavily glaciated. towards the lyells also. otherwise not so much. perhaps comparable to the terrain above the asulkan? that is, glaciated, but not broken up.

there is also lots of skiing near the hut that requires no glacier travel at all.

you're most welcome to have the topo map we used but it's only a 1:50000. there's a very useful run map on the icefall website that prints reasonably well too.

  7. I hadn't found that runs map yet. Thanks. Now I know the area. I actually spent a week on the Lyell icefield in igloos and managed to summit 3 of the 5 before getting stormed in until we skied out in the white out. ahh the memories! The lyell icefield was really solid (not many cracks) and we were there around Halloween. The trip goes from Dec 6-13, there may be spots open if you're interested. $600 food included (current estimate).

  8. hey loïc,

icefall in december eh? very tempting. however we've got a hut trip planned for march and are considering another one in february. i think a third trip would be a real stretch - financially and otherwise! i appreciate the offer though, thanks!
